During the 15th and 16th centuries, the French and Italians considered fencing an art form. The Florentine game of calcio emphasized good looks and elegant attire.

After World War II, volleyball and basketball were popular sports. Sports are a part of the world economy. They are marketed as a way to gain prestige, distinction, and power. They are also a way to draw large crowds to stadiums.
